![]() To tune the access points, IT strategically placed them on varying radio channels so that devices can more easily identify where they are supposed to connect to. In the meantime, IT is working to tune access points across campus in an effort to increase network connectivity speeds for users. Once the network infrastructure is stabilized by the new core switch, Yeung anticipates that the Wi-Fi will become more stable for users. Supply chain issues are delaying the procurement of the core switch, but Cole assured the campus community in his email that the core switches will be replaced in the next two to four weeks. “Wi-Fiber should have known how to adequately purchase something that would handle the traffic we were going to pass through it.” “The one that we have, it just can’t handle the traffic that we’re trying to push through it,” Yeung said. ![]() Yeung described the core switch as being the basic brains behind the entire network. She attributes this problem to the type of core switch that Wi-Fiber purchased. ![]() “You may not see them (IT) around campus, as much of their work is behind the scenes, but rest assured that an incredible amount of work is being completed,” Cole wrote.Ĭhief Information Officer Katrina Yeung is aware of the myriad of network connectivity issues plaguing campus, including the network randomly “dropping” for about 30 seconds. ![]() IT has determined that much of the network needs to be rebuilt in order to replace failing equipment and complete work that was unfinished - all of which is a huge endeavor, according to Cole. Cole described Wi-Fiber as being unable “to meet the standards of what is needed for our daily operations and residences.” We will continue to prioritize these improvements please know that this is a top focus of mine and the entire leadership team.”Ĭole explained that the network update that was originally designed to improve user experience has “failed” so far due to the previous network provider Wi-Fiber’s handling of the project. “I wish I had better news to share as you have not been provided the service that you deserve. “I want to start by thanking you for your patience, which is understandably wearing thin, as we work to bring our internet network to the standard of what is expected by everyone in our community, including me,” Cole wrote. President Ron Cole, ’87, expressed his frustration with the current network issues in a Sept. While most of the access points across campus are now tuned, the college’s Information Technology team is still dealing with dysfunctional equipment installed by Wi-Fiber, supply chain delays preventing the installation of a critical piece of network infrastructure for another month, and a denial-of-service cyberattack that occurred on Friday, Sept. Keep your projector safe with the RPAU, the mount offers steel locking connection points for the ultimate in projector anti-theft.Three weeks into the academic year, Wi-Fi issues persist on campus, though work to optimize network connectivity continues. ![]() Assuming that all members of a racialized group know each other or look alike is racist. ”Ī major aspect of dehumanization is the failure to recognize that people are individuals and are not connected to every member of their racialized group. ![]() No one is entitled to know the details of someone’s racialized identity or ethnic heritage. However, this praise may be appropriate in the case of oratory or speech-related actions. In general, we should compliment people on the substance of their work, not their ability to communicate that work. These harmful statements reveal the racist perception that racialized people are at an “intellectual or cognitive disadvantage” to white people. When we act surprised that an individual exceeded our racist assumptions about them, it says more about us than it does about that person’s capacity. The best way to figure out someone’s interests and talents is to get to know them personally, not to make assumptions based on their racialized identity. The fallacy that race has a biological basis has resulted in the untrue notion that certain racialized groups have particular skills or proclivities for particular activities. It’s crucial to work on why we might view someone as an “exception” to our racist assumptions instead of evaluating how the assumptions we may hold are racist. Sharing our perceptions about someone’s racial or ethnic group is never complimentary – it’s actually insulting and racist. When we say something like this, not only does it ignore and minimize the identity of the other person, but it also indicates that in systems of white supremacy, we can only humanize individuals when we separate them from their racialized identity. Microaggressions have become so ubiquitous that those who commit them might not consider them to be racist.īelow are examples of some common comments and questions that are rooted in racism, with explanations of why they should be avoided. While overt acts of racism - such as physically harming someone due to racist beliefs - are what we most commonly associate with interpersonal racism, racism takes many forms. Microaggressions have become so ubiquitous that those who commit them might not consider them to be racist. Microaggressions can be better understood as “death by a thousand cuts,” which can be detrimental to a person’s health, safety, opportunities, livelihood, personhood and more. However, microaggressions are not small, nor should they be taken lightly. Pierce PhD coined the term “microaggression” to describe the dismissive, insulting and disrespectful treatment suffered by Black individuals at the hands of non-Black individuals, and this word is often misunderstood as minor or inconsequential racist actions. This reality of interpersonal racism is often described as “everyday racism” or “casual racism.” Yet these phrases may falsely imply that the severity and dangers of racism should be downplayed. Racism does not occur exclusively in flashpoint moments of violence it is also like a poisonous mist that slowly kills us. The band was to have retired following a farewell tour in 1982, but demand for a reunion led to another tour in ’89. Entwistle, meanwhile, recorded another solo album, Too Late The Hero, which reached number 71 on the U.S. The Who kicked out two albums in the early ’80s (1981’s Face Dances and 1982’s It’s Hard). The wind, however, was knocked out of the band’s sails early in the tour, when 11 fans were trampled to death before a concert in Cincinnati in December, 1979. ![]() Though his solo career never garnered much interest in the U.S., it helped him focus on music despite the fact that the Who was on shakey ground Townshend had suffered a nervous breakdown early in the decade, Daltrey pursued acting and a solo career, and Moon moved into the party fast lane that would claim his life in 1978.ĭespite a uniform feeling that the band wouldn’t really exist after’s Moon’s passing, the Who toured in support of Who Are You, which was released just a few months before the drummer’s death. Two cases in point are “Boris the Spider,” from the band’s second album ( A Quick One) and “My Wife,” from Who’s Next.įrom 1971 to 1973, Entwistle, discouraged by certain bandmates’ falling victim to the trappings of rock stardom, released three solo albums and toured with his band, Ox. Where Townshend proved to be the cynic, the rebel, the conceptualist, Entwistle’s bizarre, often dark sense of humor lent further contrast. The Who was unique in that way: Townshend’s guitar was often the base that Moon and Entwistle would “solo” over.Īnd amid the pandemonium that was a Who concert – Townshend’s windmilling and power-posing, Moon’s run-amock drumming style, and Daltrey’s frontman posturing – Entwistle developed a trademark standstill style that contrasted visually as he laid down complex fills and countermelodies that fit perfectly.Įntwistle also wrote many noteworthy Who songs. For many reasons (like keeping up with Townshend’s taste for 100-watt amp stacks) he tended to play extremely loud and complex parts to compensate for the absence of a rhythm guitar. Guitarist Pete Townshend joined soon thereafter, then drummer Keith Moon, and the band evolved from The Detours to The High Numbers and finally The Who, and they started recording in 1964.įrom early on, The Who, being a single-guitar band, relied heavily on Entwistle to keep the music rolling. One day, as he strode down the street, homemade bass under his arm, he was approached by a neighborhood chap named Roger Daltrey, who invited him to join a band. But few of them were willing to take on the newfangled electric bass guitar, not only because the role was deemed secondary, but also because in England at the time, decent-quality basses were nearly impossible to come by.ĭespite being just 14 years old, Entwistle quickly took on double duty as bass player and bass builder, not bothering to learn guitar first. Yet another member of his generation swept up in the skiffle revival of the 1950s, Entwistle was smart enough to see that guitar players in his hometown were a dime a dozen. But Entwistle changed that situation dramatically, developing not only a unique style and establishing the stereotype of the rock-solid, unmoving bassist, but also evolving a tapping multi-hand approach to bass playing.Ī musically curious young man, John Alex Entwistle was born in Chiswick, London, in 1944, and as a schoolboy, learned to play piano and French Horn (which he would use throughout his time in the Who). Some would argue there is none higher.īefore Entwistle, the role of the bassist was nebulous the average listener didn’t pay much mind to bass notes or their placement. ![]() Pop music lovers – especially those with an ear tuned to gear and how it’s used – know that John Entwistle ranks as one of the most influential bassists in the history of rock and roll. ![]() John Entwistle with a Stratus Graphite bass. ![]() Hillard's executioners were never punished. In 1870, Bonner and Williams established Tyler's first bank. The town was secure enough for the Confederate States of America to establish the largest ordinance plant in Texas.
